If you’re thinking about writing a blog as a source of income, the most important thing to consider before setting it up is what niche your blog will target. For some reason a lot of people find the prospect of choosing a “niche” to be very scary and many a blogger have spent hours or even days tormenting over choosing a niche but it’s really very simple and in this post I’m going to show you how to choose a niche for your blog.
Any Topic Can Be A Niche!
Firstly I’d like to define the word “niche”. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a niche is a specialised segment of the market i.e. an interest that appeals to a small section of the population. A niche can be anything – it can be a hobby or interest that you have, some knowledge that you would like to share, a problem, need or want. Millions of people are using the internet every day to search for information about a topic, answers to questions or problems, things they would like to buy, etc. so any subject can potentially be a niche as I can guarantee that there will be someone who’s searching for it.
Some popular niches that there are a lot of websites / blogs about are the “weight loss supplements” niche, “make money online” niche, “how to get a six-pack” niche, etc. You may think that you need to think of a niche that hasn’t been blogged about too much as there’ll be less competition to rank highly in search results and although this is true it is not necessary because even if you choose a popular niche there will still be thousands of potential keywords and phrases that you can use in your blog posts to get your blog to appear at the top of search results. People use many different words and combinations of words when they search so there’s a lot of opportunity to rank high (this will all be explained in a later post).
Choose A Targeted Niche
When choosing a niche it’s best not to go too broad with the topic. For example if you’re interested in health and want to write a blog about it, this is a very wide subject with thousands of different subcategories so it’s difficult to effectively target a specific group of people. There are millions of people looking for information on all aspects of health so it’s important to pinpoint specific areas of the health topic. You could write about “low carb diets”, “best acne creams”, “food that is good for the skin”, etc. – these are all targeted niches which millions of people are constantly searching for information on and which you can provide them with and recommend related products to, on which you’ll get a commission.
Write About Something You Enjoy
As there are millions of different niches that you could potentially choose, it’s probably best to choose a niche that you have an interest in and would enjoy writing about as you’ll be spending quite a lot of time researching and reading about the topic and writing your blog posts. If you choose a niche that you have no interest in, then writing your blog will be a mundane task and where’s the fun in doing a job you hate?
